Most carpet stains come out if you act fast and resist the urge to scrub. The two biggest mistakes people make are rubbing the spot (which pushes the stain deeper and frays the fibers) and reaching for the strongest cleaner they own (which can bleach or set the stain).
The basic method
- Blot, don't rub. Press a clean white cloth straight down to lift liquid. Work from the outside of the spill toward the center so it doesn't spread.
- Test first. Try any cleaner on a hidden area to make sure it won't change the color.
- Go mild before strong. Cool water, then a little dish soap in water, then a vinegar-and-water mix for many food and drink spills. Rinse with plain water and blot dry.
- Finish dry. Stack paper towels with a weight on top to pull moisture up, so you don't leave a damp spot that attracts dirt.
A few specifics
Greasy spills respond to a small amount of dish soap. Coffee, wine, and juice often lift with the vinegar-water approach. Pet accidents usually need an enzyme cleaner made for the job, because it breaks down the odor source rather than masking it.
Know your fiber. Wool and some natural fibers react badly to high-alkaline or oxygen cleaners. Check the manufacturer's care guidance for your specific carpet before using anything stronger than soap and water.
